Donovan Plant, once a San Francisco private detective renowned for his sharp eye and keen instincts, has traded his sleuthing skills for a microphone and guitar, diving headfirst into the world of music. With nearly two decades spent chasing leads and tailing cheaters, Plant has returned to his first love: music. His return marks a dynamic fusion of rock, country, and pop, anchored by lyrics inspired by the city that shaped him.

Plant’s musical journey, influenced by the likes of David Bowie, The Cars, and Jackson Browne, is a testament to his exceptional ear for hooks and melody. His latest release, Night Feel Good, recorded at the legendary Hyde Street Studios with producer Trent Berry, showcases his ability to blend infectious melodies with storytelling that resonates deeply.

Forming Donovan Plant & The Leafs in 2018, Plant surrounded himself with seasoned musicians who share his vision. Drummer Lliam Hart (known for his work with Information Society and Wire Train), bassist Mike Henry (Minus One), and lead guitarist Jason Rojek (Sugar Crash) bring a wealth of experience and synergy to the band. Their chemistry is palpable, with Hart’s admiration for Plant’s songwriting leading to a collaboration that feels both effortless and innovative. The band’s name, a result of a serendipitous mis-spelling, reflects their unique and slightly offbeat charm.

Plant’s discography includes three solo EPs that trace his evolution as an artist. Be With You (2011), produced by Fabian Gorg, marked his debut, followed by City Lights (2018) with producer Scott Mickelson, and Night Feel Good (2023), which captures his artistic maturity and the depth of his musical vision. His contribution to the music community extends beyond recordings—Plant has also made a significant impact through his volunteer work with Bread & Roses Presents, performing at San Quentin State Prison for its Day of Peace celebrations in 2016 and 2017.

Critics and fans alike have praised Plant for his knack for crafting memorable tunes. Brendan Getzell of Hotel Utah Open Mic notes, “Donovan has a very keen ear for hooks, melody, inflection, structure, delivery, and other pop sensibilities, making it so easy to bond with his songs, which wind up being uniquely his own style while keeping a timeless quality.” Alan Monasch, music blogger, describes “The Universe Is A Yes Machine” as “part real autobiography, part inspiring and uplifting philosophy and all good music, a hit with heart.”

Now, as Donovan Plant continues to weave his detective’s eye for detail into his music, he remains a distinctive voice in the landscape of contemporary rock and pop. With his band, The Leafs, he’s poised to make a lasting impression, blending his San Francisco roots with a sound that’s as fresh as it is nostalgic.
